Kinetic sculpture by Georges Rickey (Zürich)

Switzerland / Zurich / Zürich
 monument, sculpture

"Two Rectangels Vertical Gyratory up III" by Georges Rickey consists of two moving chromium steel plates (6x1.5 meters) which turn silently with the wind on two axes of rotation in a chaotic fashion. Even a gentle breeze is enough to power its continuous turning. The sculpture was created in 1972 and installed here in 1990. The artist uses his ingenious, finely structured spatial constructions to visualize natural forces whilst at the same time teaching us that movement means development, not instability.

This sculpture was originally installed in 1972 at RPI in Troy, New York USA and nicknamed "The Chrinitoid". Rickey had been on the architecture faculty there. It was taken down in 1984 and re-installed at its Switzerland location, perhaps more at home in a modern urban landscape.
