Every day at noon, a cannon is fired from this battery. The tradition is a leftover from the 18th century, when ship's chronometors had to be reset so that the seafarers could navigate their way to Europe, or the East. The cannon's are loaded by the military staff who live on the base, but they are triggered remotely from Observatory, another base in Cape Town.

Just below the military base is the Noon Gun Teahouse, a great place for coffee and lunch. The family that runs it, has been living in the house for generations.
