Penmon Priory (Priordy Penmon)

United Kingdom / Wales / Beaumaris /
church, historical building, Grade I Listed (UK)

The priory is an historic building and a Christian church.

The priory was founded by Saint Seiriol in the 6th century and later became an Augustinian Christian establishment. Existing buildings date from 12th-13th centuries. It was patronised by the kings of Gwynedd and the princes of Wales. It was forcibly closed on the orders of the king of England in 1536. The dining hall is now in ruins, but most of the rest of the priory survives as a house and as Saint Seiriol's Church. The church includes two large 10th-century carved stone crosses.
