archaeological site, fort, Roman Empire, ancient civilization, historical layer / disappeared object
The site of a Roman fort and civilian settlement northeast of modern Braco and probably called Alauna Veniconum. The initial fort on the well-defined rectangular hill on the southern end of the site is believed to have been constructed by Agricola. Its extension to the north included what appears to be a later fort from the reign of Domitian. In addition, the remains of six temporary Roman camps have been identified to the east and north, some of them very extensive.
