Company Bagh, Safdar Shaheed Park (Okara)

This park was very well maintained during 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The South-western side of the park had Tennis Courts, facing Tahsil Road and C.M.R. High School. The rest of the park had beautifully maintained lush green grassy grounds, covered with eyecatching plants, shrubs, and flowerbeds, surrounded by well-trimmed hedges.

The park entrance on north-eastern side had a flower nursery with numerous varieties of flowers. The surrounding of the park was full of flower-scented breeze, spreading aroma all around the neigghborhood. This park had so many varietis of Gulab (Rose) flowers, which were unthinkable. You could find multicolor, white, yellow, pink, red, purple, orange, and black roses on rose-shrubs and rose-vines climbing on wooden arches. During our childhood, we used to chase titli (butterflies) and jUgnU (fireflies or lightning bugs) in this park.

I wonder if the Company Bagh is still well maintained and well kept!

I love Okara and have many memories associated it. Our family owned agricultural lands and fruit orchards (Bagh) in the vicinity of Okara, in Gogera, in Karman Wala, and in Marula (North of Renala Khurd). Gogera used to be District Headquarters prior to Montgomery-Sahiwal during British Rule. I grew up in Lahore, but Okara was like a second home for us.
