Verin (Upper) Agulis was a northern half of prominent Armenian town of Agulis in Nakhichevan province. Last remains of Armenian civilians was expelled by Azeris in late 1988. After the extermination of natives (Armenians), 8 Armenian churches of this town was demolished by Azeris. Most notable of them were:

* Surb T'ovma Arakeal monastery
* Surb Astvatzatzni Mets Anapat monastery
* Surb Nshan monastery
* Surb Hakob Hayrapet church

In this town was born prominant Azerbaijani writer, philanthropist and Nobel prize laureate: Akram Aylisli who known by his book "Dreams Of Stones", that reveal truth about Armenian massacres and destruction of countless monuments in Soviet and post-Soviet Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, Azeri society isn't ready yet to face its recent past, preferring to believe in the version of history concocted by current authorities, so the fighters for justice like Akram Aylisli considered traitors in it.
