The site's been a tough testimony of the social, economic, military and architectural history of the city Aarschot. It also tells the story of the business community to develop the Demer and flourished.
Furthermore, this site is unique because its full of evidence supporting the artificial river-arm with corresponding lock structure.

After 8 years of intensive preparations, the city in collaboration with private partners succeeded in the major industrial monument of Flanders to let it shine again in all its glory.

During the renovation that ended in 2011 a decorated ballroom with brasserie was build on the city side. In the parts of the building on the island a small hotel with 25 rooms was integrated. The newly constructed north wing is a rebuild of the 1970 fire destroyed part.
