Monument to Nakaiya Jube (Tsumagoi Village)

In 1820, Nakaiya Jube (or Kuroiwa Sennosuke) was born in this village. At age 20, he moved to Edo (today's Tokyo) to gain cutting-edge knowledge and skills. Before long, he opened his shop and succeded as a gunpowder merchant. In 1859, he moved to Yokohama (Port of Yokohama was opened in the same year) and opened a new shop called Akagane-Goten. He acquired immense wealth as a raw silk trader and built the foundation for the prosperity of Yokohama. On the other hand, he supported anti-Tokugawa-Shogunate group behind the curtain. In 1861, he suddenly went missing.

This monumet was erected in January 1980.
