Formerly Conrad Kissling Building (Wroclaw)

Poland / Dolnoslaskie / Wroclaw / Ofiar Oświęcimskich, 15
 apartment building, 1880_construction

This building was built at the end of the 19th century in an eclectic style. In 1888 it was acquired by the Kissling family, who ran one of the city's most popular restaurants - the Conrad Kissling Brewery - for over 100 years, second only to the Schweidnitzer Keller in fame. Kissling was the first person to bring "echt Bayerisches Bier" (genuine Bavarian beer) to Breslau. As early as 1841 the restaurant's reputation was very highly praised, with a guidebook from that time listing "Kisslings Bierkeller" as the best restaurant in the city.
In 1935 the company celebrated its 100th anniversary, expanding the restaurant on Junkernstraße (today Ofiar Oświęcimskich) to four halls and seats for 150 guests. The design alluded to its Bavarian tradition, with coats of arms of Bavarian and Franconian cities and a painting of Kulmbach on the wall. Some rooms were decorated like a mountain chalet with Silesian peasant furniture. It was said that Kissling's breweries became like a second home for many well-to-do-citizens because many could not imagine going an afternoon after work without stopping by for a beer at the famous restaurant.
The restaurant was closed following the war.
