Neo-Gothic (architecture), 1896_construction
This building was erected in 1869 in a neo-Gothic style and designed by Albert Grau. It originally housed the offices of Jewish charities established in 1838 by Jonas Fränckl, who left a great part of his estate for the establishment of charitable institutions supporting the Jewish community. The foundation endowed hospitals and almshouses, established grants, and set up the Jewish Theological Seminary. In addition, it supported young artists, and consequently had a lasting impact on the development of Jewish cultural life. The location of the building - on the prestigious Junkernstraße (now Ofiar Oświęcimskich) further demonstrates the important position many Jews held in the 19th century. It is a demonstration of two characteristics of 19th-century Breslau: the rapid development of urban construction and the vitality of the city's Jewish community.
