Sonda railway station was built in the 1890s in connection with the Tallinn–Narva broad-gauge railway, approximately 1.3 km from the current station location towards Narva, in Vana-Sonda. A new station was built at its current location in 1897, the same year a new station building was completed. In the early 1900s, the construction of the broad-gauge Sonda–Aseri railway section was completed in connection with the construction of the Aseri cement plant. In 1923, construction of the Sonda–Mustvee narrow-gauge railway began. The Sonda–Avinurme–Mustvee narrow-gauge railway line was opened for traffic on 1 August 1926. The 62.6 km long railway had 16 stations or stops. The Avinurme–Mustvee section of the narrow-gauge railway was closed in the summer of 1968. The Sonda–Avinurme section, in turn, was completed on 1 May 1972. The Sonda–Aseri industrial railway was closed for repairs in 1997, but was soon looted by thieves. Plans were made to build a new line, but these were abandoned.
