Originally an historically black private secondary school established in the late 1800's to train and educate blacks migrating north from the deep south. Seen as a model for Negro education the school was taken over by the state where it continued to provide education for area blacks in various "service" crafts.

Due to its state ownership the school was closed in 1954 with the Brown vs Board of Education ruling and later converted into a Juvenile detention facility.

  • Hmmm, former black school now serving roughly the same population as a detention facility. Progress?
