wall(s), fortification
Pseudo medieval fortifications built by the architect John Vanburgh as part of the entrance to c Castle Howard. Vanburgh had previously been a dramatist and much of his architectural work shows the influence of theatre scenery. This and other 'medieval' items around the estate were created to allude to the original castle on the estate prioe to the Baroque house being built.
