El nombre responde al segundo río de la provincia que antiguamente pasaba cerca de aquí, y hoy es el que da vida a toda la zona hidrográfica con el pantano que riega las tierras de la comarca. La superficie inicial de actuación fue de 10.000 Ha aumentando en 1953 en 550 más; en la actualidad la zona regable alcanza cerca de las 16.000 Ha. La colonia de Caulina supone la primera iniciativa colonizadora, hoy integrada en Guadalcacín. En 1952 se procedió a la selección de los colonos para ocupar las fincas de la dehesa de Angulo y la Jerezana entre agricultores procedentes de Alcalá de los Gazules, Medina Sidonia, Paterna de Rivera y Jerez de la Frontera. En este mismo año se instalan los primeros 21 colonos de Guadalcacín en unos barracones que, a tal efecto, había construido el INC. Aún no existía el pueblo tal y como ahora lo conocemos, que fue construyendose a partir de 1954. El 4 de diciembre de 1956 el Director general del I.N.C. Comunica al Ministerio de Gobernación que se ha construido un nuevo pueblo al que se le ha dado el nombre de "Guadalcacín del Caudillo", del cual se hallaban entregadas 40 viviendas a otros tantos colonos. El 26 de abril del año siguiente se produce el Decreto del Ministerio por el que "se constituye en Entidad Local Menor el pueblo de Guadalcacín del Caudillo construido por el I.N.C." B.O.E. Nº 128 de 14-05-57. En 1986 la Junta vecinal en sesión ordinaria acuerda cambiar el nombre a la Entidad Local por el de "Guadalcacín". Los años 80 y, sobre todo, los 90 han sido las décadas del gran impulso demográfico y económico de Guadalcacín. La población activa ya no tiene sólo carácter agrícola sino que integran un contingente amplio dedicado a la construcción, a la industria y a los servicios. Desde hace años la población cambió su mentalidad agrícola y, hoy se dedica a la nueva actividad de la flor cortada, al cinturon agroalimentario y, sobre todo, a la ciudad del transporte, donde se concentra todo el movimiento de mercancias de la ciudad.
