When this region was being logged (c1835), the 48-metre drop and 750 metre canyon was a daunting problem for the lumbermen running the winter's cut down the Coulonge River to the Ottawa en route to Britain. To get the logs through it without jamming or being smashed on the rocks, a log slide almost a kilometre long was built along the sides of the canyon. Today, only some of the iron anchors that held the cute in place remain, but Coulonge Chutes is a popular destination to get a glimpse back at the days of the lumbermen, with an interpretive center and well-signed walks around the site.
