Marksburg Castle

Germany / Rheinland-Pfalz / Brey /
castle, UNESCO World Heritage Site, 13th century construction

Marksburg Castle is a fortress above the town of Braubach. It is the best preserved castle on the Middle Rhine and has never been destroyed. The reason is its location, as it sits atop a steep hill on a bend in the river, the formidable terrain discouraged enemies. The castle was never attacked during the countless wars that raged through the centuries.

It is one of the principal sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhine Gorge. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families.
