Kioa Island, located opposite Buca Bay on Vanua Levu, is one of two Fijian islands inhabited by South Sea Islanders. Along with Rabi, which is occupied by Kiribati settlers, Kioa is leased by settlers from Tuvalu, most of whom immigrated between 1947 and 1983. A proposal to settle the entire Tuvaluan population on Kioa has been mooted by Tuvaluan scientist and activist Don Kennedy.

  • Kioa is not leased but it was bought as a freehold land by the people of Vaitupu Island, Tuvalu in 1946. Donald Kennedy Senior was involved in such innovative project currently benefiting the people of Vaitupu residing on Kioa Island.
  • I have re-done the polygon trying to conform to the shape of the island. In portions when one can zoom right in, it is clear that the actual shoreline is inside the mangrove belt; in poorer quality portions, it is harder to tell - and in some cases the mangrove belt appears to merge with coastal reef in a homogenous green. Hopefully one day the entire island will have clear satellite photos!
