The Roman Arena is the most heavily visited tourist attraction in the city of Arles, which is the gateway to the Camargue.
The Arena was built around 1 B.C., or approximately 125 years after the Romans colonized Arles and the Rhône Delta. It seated 20,000 spectators on three tiers. Today, the Arena is used for bullfights, concerts, operas, and theatre performances. It also played a featured role in John Frankenheimer's 1998 action movie Ronin, where Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, and other spies chased each other through ancient passages beneath the stands.
