Due to its location Mattsee is often described as the Venice of Salzburg. The famous Collegiate church, third-oldest in Austria, was founded 777 by Duke Tassilo from Bavaria and includes a monastic museum an original wine cellars. The composer Diabelli was born in Mattsee and during the Summer months a music festival called "Diabelli Sommer" is produced in the village. The newly-designed bathing area is of the highest standard proffering a water slide and flat beaches, safe for children to play on. Visits to the small, renovated medieval castle, the model Bajuwaren (original bavarians) village and a trip on the boat "Seenland" over two lakes, are a must.
