 village, hamlet

Founded by Daniil Vikulov in 1695, a Sacristan of staroobryadtsy (Old Ritualists, Old Orthodox Church). The Vyg Community, also known as the Vyg River Hermitage, was a community of priestless Old Believers founded in 1695 in northern Russia in the Lake Onega region. Led by Andrew and Simeon Denisov, the settlement grew, becoming self-sufficient and a major economic and cultural centre of northern Russia. Its settlers formed one faction of the priestless Old Believers--the "Shore Dwellers." In 1854-55, Nicholas I broke up the community and destroyed many of its buildings.
