Cothen is a small town with about 3000 inhabitants. Since 1996 it belongs to the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede, before that it was its own municipality. The town has a orchard located in its centre, with various apple trees.
The town lies in the so called "Kromme Rijnstreek" (English: Crooked Rhine Region) because the river the Kromme Rijn flows along the town.
Cothen is mostly a catolic town, but there is also a reformed church which is build around 1500.
