The former small Soviet naval base, closed and abandoned in 1994. Littoral vessels and some up to frigate-size have been left derelict at this site.

A fishing and whaling town in the late 19th Century, later made into a military outpost in the 20th Century. Many civilian settlers were evacuated from the area during the Second World war. After 1945 many returned. In the 1950's and 60's, the military presence grew.

The military was a boon to locals at first, bringing improved transit, supplies, and jobs. However, in 1969, locals were deported and only military personnel were permitted in the area. With the collapse of the USSR, most of the active military presence left by 1994.
