Korea (South) / Pusan / Yeongju-dong

Busan Democracy Park was established to honor spirit of the citizens of Busan for democracy who have played a significant part in the development of democracy in Korea through the April 19 Democratic Revolution in 1960, the historic Busan-Masan democratic Uprising in 1979 and the June Democratic Uprising in 1987.

The Busan Democracy Park was first suggested in 1995 by non-governmental organizations, including Busan Democratic Movement Memorial Association. Driven in earnest by Pan-Citizens Promoting Committee of Busan Democracy Park Establishment which, after its organization in July 1996, invited the public to join in a contest for the Busan Democracy Park's constitution and design proposal, and held public hearings to draw a citizens' consensus for the Busan Democracy Park in 1996 to 1999.

Busan Democracy Park opened on Oct. 16, 1999, the twentieth memorial day of Pusan-Masan Democratic Uprising, and four years after the first suggestion.

Over fourteen million dollars was spent constructing the complex providing an outdoor performance hall, an arboretum, thematic memorial corners, circular way and Democratic Movement Memorial Center. The grounds cover over five acres and the total floor space occupies over one and a third acres.

The park incorporates a Standing Exhibition Room, Planning Exhibition Room, Little and Middle Theaters on tree floors above ground and one floor below ground. The complex is used as both an education facility advancing democracy, and as a culture center for citizens of Busan.
