Gaslamp Quarter (San Diego, California)

A historic district of San Diego with 100 buildings built between 1880 and 1930, it is the remaining heart of "New Town San Diego" founded in 1867 by Alonzo Horton. It was once known as the Stingaree and had a long association with sailors on shore leave due to its many bars and brothels. Through "adaptive reuse" (i.e., sanitized), the Gaslamp's consumer-friendly restaurants and bars are patronized by empty-brained troglodytes instead of drunken sailors.

  • Back in the 70's, when I was in the Navy, we'd go down here and get drunk when we got into port. It was infamous for being really seedy, full of tattoo parlors, "titty bars", burlesque theaters, etc. It's changed quite a bit since then, but honestly, the crowd that comes here is still the same.
  • I would go to a Gaslamp titty bar before I would step foot in whatever is passing for a "bar" or "restaurant" down there these days.
