725 Granville (Vancouver)

Canada / British Columbia / Vancouver / Granville Street, 725
 office building, 1973_construction, 1970s construction

Built in 1973 and home to Eaton's department store until 1999 when Sears Canada bought a number of the more prominent locations across Canada (including Pacific Centre) and re-launched the Eaton's brand as a supposedly higher-end concept which was unsuccessful. Sears closed the remaining Eaton's locations in 2002 and converted them to regular Sears stores.

In early 2012 Cadillac Fairview (owner/operator of Pacific Centre) bought out the Sears lease and closed the store. The building, a notorious eyesore frequently compared to a giant toilet bowl, underwent a total renovation. The tile cladding of the building was removed, and the top 4 floors were converted to office space, while the bottom three were renovated into a 230,000 sq. ft., Nordstrom department store that opened in 2015, and the basement level was turned into expanded Pacific Centre mall space. The Nordstrom store closed in 2023.

Comments

  • A hideous eyesore of a building. Looks sort of like the Staypuft Mashmellow Man, but without any of the charm. Filthy, too.
  • Floors 1-5 were built first. 6-7 are the rounder "cap" on top.
