Father Angelo Casanova had a whalebone and rubble stone walk installed here during his pastorate (1870-1893). It was removed during the 1942 restoration because it became a walking hazard due to uneven wear. During Monterey's whaling years from around 1850 until 1900, whale bones were commonly used for as sidewalk material, structural foundations, and fertilizer. The only example of a whalebone sidewalk left in Monterey can be found in front of the 1847 Old Whaling Station.
