quay, dock (maritime), invisible
Here ended the first part of the current canal Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten, dug in 1846. Only seventeen years later the canal was extended and connected to Schoten (Antwerp) (see New Quay). Places like this served as a site for industrial development, because of the particular transport benefits. Initially the quay served as an inner harbour for the supply of raw materials from around Liege and to irrigate the acid soils of the Kempen.
