Government Precinct (Greater Western Sydney)

Australia / New South Wales / Sydney / Greater Western Sydney

Situated in the geographic centre of greater Sydney, just North of Parramatta Stadium, is an area that has been refered to as "The Rocks" of Western Sydney.

Perhaps the richest site in all of Australia for Colonial Heritage assets, this area was settled in late 1788 (just 9 months after Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay) and amazingly still contains an absolute abundance of original stone buildings, grand residences, miscellanious structures, workings, mill races, plantings and related artifacts.

The land and it's assets are currently under the control of the Western Area Health Service. Unfortunately due to a lack of focus on maintaining and retaining this area of special significance, many of the buildings which form the backbone and tell the story of Australia's earliest colonial history are deteriorating through misuse and neglict.

A Master Plan exists for the Mixed Use Redevelopment of this area, which has been adopted by the Director General of the Department of Planning. Managed responsibly and with adequit respect for existing Heritage assets this exciting project will not only transform the Parramatta area but also celebrate and showcase Parramatta (and Australia's) rich colonial heritage.
