Rotuma Island, along with its outliers, is the most distant of the 322 islands and 522 islets making up the Republic of Fiji Islands. Located some 500 kilometers from the Fijian archipelago itself, the island, whose population is predominantly of Polynesian origin, enjoys a special administrative status in Fiji, with a high degree of autonomy.

Daniel Fatiaki, Fiji's Chief Justice, is a native of Rotuma.
