The cemetery was founded in 1741 and served the Jewish religious community, which had a Synagogue founded in 1745 as a replacement of an improvised house Synagogue of 1738. Veendam-Wildervank had a large Jewish population which abruptly collapsed during World War 2 when an overwhelming part perished in the camps of Auschwitz and Sobibor.

Most gravestones at the site date from the 19th and early 20th century.
