Cotton broker Otto Frerichs commissioned Bremen's official architect Johaannes Poppe to build Villa Frerichs c. 1880. Poppe is considered one of the first ship architect to bring the trappings of domestic luxury to ships interiors. "Poppe baroque" style set the standard for decades. Its been said Poppe's style was influenced in part by the American decor of steamboats plying the Mississippi River. Otto Ferichs had Poppe design his home around what he remembered in his travel to New Orleans for business.
