This airport is the main airport of the Italian region Fruili Venzia Guila; it is also called International Airport of Trieste-Ronchi dei Legionari
It serves Trieste which has a total population of 298,000 (2001 Census).
In 2008 1,078,679 passengers travelled through the airport making it the 12th busiest airport in Italy.

Future

The airport has planned for expansion to the terminal including ten more check in desks, a larger arrivals hall and three more departure lounges, so the airport will have an estimated 5 million passengers by the end of 2014. The Italian aviation group declined the airports request for a longer runway.
