Founded 1896 as The Shelter Island Golf Links, architect unknown. The first clubhouse was a saltbox built by Thomas Dering during the years of the American Revolution, and stands today on the Hines Estate, adjacent to the present club. The course was annexed by the Manhanset House hotel and was renamed The Manhanset Club at the turn of the century. In 1926 the course was again renamed The Dering Harbor Club, with new clubhouse and management. The course was restored after war closure, and in 1951 was incorporated as GBCC.
