Shelter Island is a town (and island) in Suffolk County, NY. Within the town is the hamlet of Shelter Island, the hamlet of Shelter Island Heights and the Village of Dering Harbor: the smallest village in New York State. The island has no residential mail delivery, everyone has a PO box. There are no traffic signals, no movie theaters, no fast food franchises, a school with about 265 students and a senior class of 20. Access to the Island is limited to ferry lines at the north (to Greenport) and the south (to North Haven). The permanent population is around 2,500, increasing to around 8,000-10,000 at the height of the summer. It was settled in the early 1650s by Nathaniel Sylvester, who harvested timber here for use on his Barbados sugar plantation. The plantation and Manor House are still in his family.
