Polish name of this district was for a long time "ZWM - Związek Walki Młodych" ("Union of Fighting Youth"). UoFY was a communist youth organization, initially fighting against Germans during WWII (600 members). After the war (110-260 thousands of members from 1945 to 1948) they were actively fighting against non-communist organizations. Due to negative history ZWM is not liked in Poland, however it has became a common name for the district, not truly conected with organization.
In 2008 district name was changed to "AK" to commemorate Polish Home Army (AK, Armia Krajowa), a huge resistance movement under German and Russian occupation.
