charitable organization, community centre / hall
The Kingswood Foundation is a charity which exists 'to inspire young people through the arts'. The Charity owns and maintains this 29 acre site which provides arts facilities, studios and a base for 25 other charities many of whom work with young people.
A school for itinerant preachers' sons was set up on this site by John Wesley in 1739. This moved to Bath in the 1850s and the site subsequently became the Kingswood Reformatory, later the Kingswood Approved School, an industrial school for wayward boys which gave instruction in trades such as agriculture and brickmaking. The reformatory closed in 1991 and the site assumed its present use soon after.
