The Joensuu Bunker Museum contains part of the largest construction project ever undertaken in Finland, the Salpa Defence Line, extending for a total of 1200 kilometres from the Gulf of Finland to Salla in Lapland and on from there to the Arctic Ocean in the form of a series of field fortifications.
One combined machine-gun and anti-tank artillery bunker and one machine-gun bunker were constructed in the Marjala area. Each had both combat trenches and accommodation for 20 men. The bunkers at Marjala now serve as a museum depicting the Salpa Defence Line as a whole. The field fortifications surrounding the reinforced concrete bunkers have been partly restored using wooden structures of the original kind.
