Built in the 17th century (1656—1685), this cathedral was the biggest architectural idea of Patriarch Nikon. He wished to make a Russian model of the Resurrection Cathedral (also called the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre) in Jerusalem. For the purpose, he had drawings and the model of the latter brought to Russia. Yet, the Patriarch decided that the Jerusalem basilica wastoo modest and ordered more decorations for the cathedral. A special feature of the building are brighhtly coloured tiles, forming the iconostasis and a belt on the exterior. The best architects and artists were invited for the works. The hip roof is 23m in diameter, and 18m in height; it was a great architectural achievement for its time. In 1723 it broke down during a fire, and replaced with a wooden one - it was destroyed by the Nazies in 1941.
