This section of the Intramuros walls was breached in 1903 by American engineers to provide street access to Dewey (now Roxas) Boulevard and the Port Area.

The present bridge was completed with the assistance of the Office of Senator Aquilino J. Pimentel, Jr.; the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH); the Department of Tourism (DOT); and the Intramuros Administration (IA).

Opened on 12 June 2002 during the 104th celebration of the Centennial of Philippine Independence.
