Königsberg Castle (Kaliningrad)

Russia / Kaliningrad / Kaliningrad
museum, ruined castle, place with historical importance, invisible, do not draw title, historic ruins

The castle was bombed by the Royal Air Force in the Second World War in 1944 and was completely burnt out. The ruins were able to withstand both the aerial bombing and Soviet Artillery, as well as urban fighting in April 1945, thanks to its thick walls.

Leonid Brezhnev consequently ordered that the remains of the castle be disposed of so they would no longer be seen as a vestige of Prussian militarism in the eyes of the Soviet Government. Despite protests from students and intellectuals from Kaliningrad, the ruins of the castle were finally destroyed in 1968.
