Svyato-Voznesensky (Saint Ascension) Russian Orthodox cathedral (Almaty) | wooden, interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, 1907_construction, Russian Orthodox Church

cathedral, wooden, interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, 1907_construction, Russian Orthodox Church

The cathedral, designed by Paul Zenkov and largely built between 1904 and 1907, is entirely built of local
spruce, and the joinery was apparently done without any nails. It is said to be the largest wooden building (by
volume) and the second tallest wooden building in the world. The building was put to a variety of secular uses
during the Soviet era before being returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1994 (in poor condition) and the
building was completely restored between 1994 and 2000. There is a UNESCO web page with considerable
information on the history and restoration of the cathedral.
