After almost being captured by the 10th Hussars on 19th October 1914, Ledeghem remained in German hands for four years. It was captured by the 9th (Scottish) Division on 1st October 1918, but they could not hold onto the whole of it, it was eventually cleared on the 14th by the 29th Division. The church, school and civil hospital of Ledeghem were all used by the Germans as hospitals, and during their period of occupation they buried both German and British casualties in three cemeteries in the commune.

The Military Cemetery was made by the 29th Division as Ledeghem New Cemetery in October 1918, and 14 burials were later removed from Ledeghem Churchyard and re-interred in this cemetery.
