Akureyri Junior College is one of Iceland's oldest schools with a student population of approx. 600. The students are aged 16-20, and they come from different parts of the country. The school runs a boarding house which provides accommodation for about 150 students. In addition, around 100 students from other regions of the country live in rented quarters in the town. About half of the students are inhabitants of Akureyri. The Principal of Akureyri Junior College is Tryggvi Gíslason.

Akureyri Junior College is firmly based in tradition and was for a long period a conventional grammar school. During the past years and decades, the school has evolved with changing times and is now one of three Icelandic schools at secondary level which the Ministry of Education has chosen to lead in the development of information technology in teaching and study. This goal is now being worked at in accordance with the school's five year plan. It is anticipated that all of the school's teachers and students will participate in this project. One of the main premises of the plan is that information technology and some type of computer mediated communication will be relevant to all subjects taught in the school. This development project is supervised by Lára Stefánsdóttir, head of the school's computer department.
