The company Sterigenics the Stork Street in Zoetermeer has for many years emitted a much larger quantity of the substance ethylene oxid ethan allowed in open air. This will effect the health of approximately 2,000 residents and workers in the area around the company. This number was limitted by drawing the contour outside the urban area. In the years 2006 and 2007 there has been a too high emission of ethylene oxide (140 tons where only 8 tons were permitted). Sterigenics uses this substance to sterilize medical equipment and clothing. Ethylene oxide is known as a carcinogen. The contour indicates the area with, limited by the municipality, with "only" an increased health risk.
