  Heatley State High School enrolled its first year eight students in 1968. By 1972, all five year levels were populated. Initially the surrounding suburbs were largely undeveloped and students generally rode bicycles or walked to school along dirt roads and dirt tracks. By 1972, housing in the suburbs of Heatley and Vincent had developed rapidly; largely as housing for defence force families in Townsville.
