Akadēmijas laukums is so named due to the towering Academic Centre, which was "presented by the people of Russia to the people of Latvia." Designed by Osvalds Tilmanis, Vaidelotis Apsītis and Kārlis Pluksne, it was opened in 1958. Originally intended as the head-quarters of the collective farmers, after completion, with typical Soviet logic, the building was deemed unsuitable for the farmers and given instead to the Academy of Science. It is identical to many such buildings in the former Soviet capital cities and from the top can be got the finest views in all Riga - for it is only from there that the building cannot be seen! For reasons not altogether clear, it was thought that the point at the top had great military significance and was an expression of Stalin's genius. Near the top can still be seen the imfamous Soviet insignia of the hammer and sickle.
