Kabara, in the Lau archipelago, is home to the noted sculptor Jone Lupe, whose family have been engaged in the craft for generations. The total population of some 700 live in four villages.
Some reports claim that Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is a native of Kabara, but that is incorrect. He is, in fact, from Vanua Balavu, an island to the north-east of Kabara.
