One of the water supply reservoirs for the Boston area. Built between 1897-1908 by damming the South Branch of the Nashua river. At the time of its construction, the Wachusett was the largest man-made reservoir. As Boston's water demands grew, it was augmented by the construction of the Quabbin Reservoir to the west, which feeds into Wachusett via an underground aqueduct. Water from Wachusett flows out via another underground aqueduct to the Sudbury Reservoir. The Clinton dam can be seen to the Northeast, a large masonry block dam. Wachusett is also fed by the Stillwater and Quinapoxset rivers.
Downtown West Boylston was destroyed during the building of the reservoir, as were parts of Boylston and Clinton.
