Thought to be the oldest standing colonial building in South Africa, it was erected by the Dutch shortly after van Riebeeck arrived, to serve as a lookout post and marker of Dutch presence in False Bay. It is now a small museum.
Of interest is one of the floorstones, which has the boat-shaped grooves indicative of an ochre-grinding stone - a sign of the earlier (probably San or Khoekoe) inhabitants of the area.
