The village of Kemmel and the adjoining hill, Mont Kemmel, was the scene of fierce fighting in the latter part of April 1918. This cemetery was started in January 1917 when Plots 1-3 were made by fighting units and Field Ambulances, and continued to be used by these until the middle of January 1918. Plot 4 was added in April 1918 and many of the burials were Officers and men of Artillery units. After the armistice more graves were added, some were placed in Plot 1 Row H and others formed Plots 4-7, these graves were moved from other small battlefield cemeteries in the area.
One American soldier originally buried here was later removed to Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
